Connecting to your Windows VPS over RDP

Retrieve your Windows VPS credentials and connect over Remote Desktop (RDP) from Windows, macOS or Linux.

Updated

Retrieving your credentials

Your connection details (IP address, Administrator username, password) are sent by email when the VPS is activated, and remain available from the service details in Artaun Hosting.

Connecting from Windows

Windows ships with the Remote Desktop Connection client built in:

  1. Open the Start menu and search for "Remote Desktop Connection".
  2. Enter the IP address of the VPS.
  3. Click Connect, then enter the username and password you were given.

An unrecognised-certificate warning usually appears on the first connection (this is normal, the RDP certificate is self-signed): accept it to continue.

Connecting from macOS

Install the free Microsoft Remote Desktop app from the App Store, then add a new connection with the VPS IP address and the credentials provided.

Connecting from Linux

An RDP client such as Remmina (available in most distributions) works the same way: new connection, RDP protocol, IP address and credentials.

Common connection problems

Making the connection smoother

In the advanced options of the RDP client, lowering the graphics quality (colours, visual effects, resolution) noticeably improves smoothness over a slower internet connection — useful if the interface feels choppy.
